Asbestos Rockpyle - Police State / Bombs From Belfast (1984)

Lo-fi political art punk from Suitland, Maryland. Police State is a barn burnin' chunk of drum machine, twisted guitar lines, and vocals segued from the bullhorn announcements of the state (police). Bombs From Belfast sounds to me like someone making fun of The Clash. Probably not their intent but it works for me!

Free 1984 Sect. One (1984)

Great 7" compilation that originally came with a booklet. Portion Control start things out with an odd electro dance tune. Rinf do a nice bit of noisy post punk. The highlight for me are the two dark minimal EBM type tracks from Die Form. So no record cover, but each band contributed some postcard sized art.

Liberté? / A State of Mind - Don't Vote... Subvert (1984) Liberté? - Racism in America (1985)

Liberté? were a anarcho-peace-punk band from San Francisco. Musically more diverse than your average punk band. Tending towards the arty side like fellow SF band Sleeping Dogs. The Crass influence is readily apparent in the artwork (which is included) and music. The first song sounds just like 'fight war not wars' with the mantra of don't vote inserted. The Candidates Rap and Tribal Territorial Talks are my picks with strong bass lines and Crass type wall of noise guitar.

Along with the A State of Mind / Chumbawamba split 7" and A State of Mind's EP. Mutant Sounds has the more experimental Cyrnai - Charred Blossoms done by band member Carolyn Fok. I also included an A State of Mind poster reminiscent of Penis Envy. That I must have picked up at one of their shows.

Sis Q Lint - Pre-Need E.P. (1984)

Wonderfully entertaining absurdist tomfoolery from Los Angeles. Similar in spirit to the likes of Inflatable Boy Clams or 2.3 Children. The detached deadpan femme vocals are coupled with silly satirical lyrical insights about out of control poodles, the stresses of finding a proper mortician for oneself, and the cheesiness of low budget romantic pretendings. The music is quite entertaining as well. Synths, sound effects, sound clips, and percussions. All artasticly mastered at Gold Star studios. Try listening to Dog Sweaters without cracking a big grin. There's a good review from San Francisco's Unsound zine to read here. They also put a single Wally! Wally! / The Very Last Record from Gold Star. That I'm dying to hear, anyone?

City of Silver (1984)

Listen listen me no lie, this compilation hits 'pie in the sky'. "Features the music of the other Los Angeles" The music here is primarily DIY synth / minimal synth tunes. Also has a couple of atmospheric synth tracks, a death rock tune, a new wave lounge deal, and a noise experiment.

Interesting that this was an early release of Plastic Head Records from the UK, and these bands were in L.A. Not sure how that came about, but it may speak to the lack of support for this kind of music in the US compared to the UK. Or so it seemed to me, of course it could be a matter of the grass being greener.

Psychic Dogs, Pubic Fish, Duck Fella, The Plymouth Fastbucks, Zasu Pitts, and Smokey Joe Popp. Have all won me over big time. Leaving me wanting to hear more. Though it seems only Bamboola released anything else. I included the inserts, which have more info on all of these fine bands.

Bay Of Pigs (1984)

Not to be confused with the earlier Bay of Pigs from San Francisco. This band was from Los Angeles, and while this is not as odd as the preceding band. This still has some alluring post punky charm. The singers colorful spazz vocalizing strategies will amuse and entertain.

The 700 Club - EP (1984) / Smash The State Of The Art (1986)

Two more from Jim Freeman and cohorts. I put up his Golden Gate Jumpers, Masochist In Drag / Crazy Money single here. The EP is closer to the jumpers single. Mutant Clone and Mind Rape are good weirdo wave songs. On the LP Crazy Money gets redone. The tempo is generally slower, rhythms are mostly drum machines. The female vocals, and the prominent horn section sound almost RIO at times. Making Smash The State Of The Art sound like something that could have come out on Chis Cutler's Recommended Records.

Sacred Cows - Separatist 7" 1984

A great Nebraska post-punk band. Casio, fuzz guitar, competent rhythm section and varied vocal delivery from wistful (on Separatist, a pean to willful self isolation) to humorously arch and angry (on Abandoned by History.)

I think I picked this up at Trade-a-Tape in Lincoln when I was in High School during one of my regular record runs: first Dirt Cheap then Trade-a-Tape looking for used records and then (if there was any money left) through the alley to Pickles for new imports.

Years later I got to know bassist/vocalist David Zikmund's older brother Brian (who I believe played with Sideshow's Paul Tisdale in Sam The Butcher, a long running Lincoln pounding-on-stuff project) When I figured out the connection to Sacred Cows I surprised him with some choice Sacred Cows lyrics randomly dropped into a conversation... he was very surprised as they were pretty well forgotten by 1991. When he got over his surprise he probably went back to asking our mutual friend Craig if he was going to roll a big fatty before the Simpsons started.

I got the idea Sacred Cows were from Kearny... I think L. Kent Wolgamot said so in his actual review of this record in the Lincoln Journal Star (he liked them but panned the Boat People for sounding snotty like Johnny Rotten... or that's how I remember it... why do I still remember this stuff?) Maybe they were actually from Lincoln though. Jim Jones of zero-hour Lincoln punk/wave zine Capitol Punishment says so and he ought to know. Still the mailing address for the Band says Kearny. It's a big mystery! I always liked the idea of the Sacred Cows playing gigs in Kearny, setting up their casio at Cattlemans while families scarfed Prime Rib.

They had a track on one of the Capitol Punishment cassettes too, I'll add that to the 'to blog' list.

[update] David Zikmund informs me that Brian is his older brother, and that there were a couple of other Sacred Cows tracks that did not make the E.P., maybe we can get hold of those and post another update...

The Sensational Creed / Orbidöig - Nocturnal Operations / Down Pericomoscopes (1981)

The Sensational Creed (otherwise known as Orbidöig) and Nocturnal Operations / Down Pericomoscopes originally came to Beggars Banquet on 1981 via Billy MacKenzie of The Associates as a one-off single and was released through the Situation Two label. It was then re-released on Beggars Banquet on the 30th November 1984 (just in time for Christmas).

The Sensational Creed were essentially two people - Christine Beveridge and Steve Reid - both closely allied with The Associates. Steve was in fact playing with The Associates by 1984 and contributing to their album. Billy MacKenzie had been consistently quoting them as his favourite group which is typically perverse since they had never played live and had to date only made this one record.

Christine contributed backing vocals on the first Big Country album
