The Earth Hell Band - Witches on Holiday (1986)

Very strange dark industrial experimental offerings from the Washington DC area. This record brings to mind Factrix, and early Current 93. Released on Outside Records after the demise of the awesome noise-punk band Nuclear Crayons.

Ron Miller - Till the End / Sick and Tired (1986)

Making it's way from Salt Lake City, Utah, onto your computer chips. Is an old favorite of mine, courtesy of Ron Miller. The savage strange sounds of Sick and Tired are made all the more deranged by the effects processed vocals, bemoaning the tale of a war vet that's had to much to think. I remembered Sick and Tired as being the standout track, but after listening to this again lately Till the End has been fastened to my memories repeat button. Seriously can't get it out of my head. Not that I want to with Ron's warm croon and some of the best mystifying lyrics to demystify. 'just look inside of someone that you know so well. often called yourself, but then can you tell which one that is?' Punk business manager blogged Ron's earlier band Angle here.

Ron was kind enough to write a few words of explanation and description.
This was a result of experiments recorded somewhat surreptitiously at KUED studios after hours about 2 years before the record was pressed. The studio players were selected from my ultimate wish list of guys I wanted to work with in the SLC, UT area. The backing tracks were recorded in a few hours on one day. None of them had heard any of the music. They did a great job and special thanks to the producer, Eliot Case, for all his hard work and for making sure it got pressed. I slapped the cover together at the local Kinko's for all of $10. The photo is a self portrait taken on a photo-lithographic camera used to make plates for small printing presses. The use of acoustic guitar was largely associated with Yacht Rock or Folk and was considered somewhat radical at the time.

Factory - Rat Inside My Head \ Electric Buffalo (1986)

Lo-fi post-punk with noisy guitar and heavy bass. Real cool and cryptic stuff. The song titles are etched into the run-out groove, but appear no where else. Definitely worth checking out.

Headless Chickens (1986)

The debut from Auckland, New Zealand's Headless Chickens is as strange as the story of the band itself. The band would basically become a continuation of the stellar post-punk band  Children's Hour. After the break up of Children's Hour  Chris Matthews (the hero of our story) joined another stellar post-punk band, This Kind of Punishment on some of their seminal works including A Beard of Bees, TKoP and Live '85 . After which Chris Matthews, Johnny Pierce, and Michael Lawry. Would become Headless Chickens for this 1st EP. The band had a few more personnel additions in later years.

The odd catchy song work here really defies categorization. Although they do seem good at twisting different genres, dementing them with their own particular intent. Post-punk (Monkey Jar), minimal synth (Axe), pop (Totalling Dad's Car), punk (Agit Pop), noise-rock (Hedge Song), TKoP (The Slice), space-rock (The Ghost of Some Cold Street). All the with unmistakeable chilling vocals of Chris Matthews, drum machines, synths, guitars, samplers, tape manipulations, and whatever else.

As a reviewer on RYM puts it- "This 7-track EP is a meticulous assemblage of rhythm, melody, and leftfield lyrics - cut up, mashed, filtered, then processed through a menagerie of 'treated' sound effects - sometimes devastatingly original, and superbly conceived. It can't really be described as being in a genre, so I call it art-punk - but you have to hear it really, to grasp it. It's just kinda out there ... alongside other 'radicals' like The Residents and Pere Ubu."

After winning the Rheineck Beer Rock award (whatever that is) for this EP. Which was apparently controversial. They where able to fund their later experiments on Stunt Clown. The story does get stranger, because they would go on to score a number 1 hit in New Zealand years later.

Base Hands - Whiphand / No Pain (1986)

Superb post punk single from Australia. Similar in sound with other Aussie greats The Birthday Party and The Moodists. I included scans of the homemade record labels, as I find them charming.
Not one to be missed!

Virgin Circus - Comic Opera Kingdom (1986)

A two man project of Billy Ledges, and Tony Michaels from California. The first track is a dark minimal synth punk gem. A cover of Hurdy Gurdy Man follows. Then back to minimal synth on What Simon Says. Followed by lots of great synth wave. Check it all out.

Jonathan X & Black Heat - Might Is Right / The New Kings (1986)

Strange stuff from Washington D.C. Might Is Right sounds like a pre-Beatnigs demo, with some noise guitar thrown in. Things really get interesting on the flip side, The New Kings. An insistent synth line and stuttering guitar mesh with the disjointed lyrics about relations between the sexes.

The 700 Club - EP (1984) / Smash The State Of The Art (1986)

Two more from Jim Freeman and cohorts. I put up his Golden Gate Jumpers, Masochist In Drag / Crazy Money single here. The EP is closer to the jumpers single. Mutant Clone and Mind Rape are good weirdo wave songs. On the LP Crazy Money gets redone. The tempo is generally slower, rhythms are mostly drum machines. The female vocals, and the prominent horn section sound almost RIO at times. Making Smash The State Of The Art sound like something that could have come out on Chis Cutler's Recommended Records.
