Glad Corp (1983)

From New Kent, Virginia comes a great three song 7", of the DIY wacky minimal synth pop variety. I'm Sorry seems to be an ode to masochistic apologizes. Alone has fun helium backing vocals. Streetboys of Green my fav with it's surreal lyrics. Glad Corp also put out a three song cassette you can listen to here.

Willy Nilly (1982)

Interesting Dutch postpunk explorations. The basic guitar bass drums, with synth and sax fleshing things out. On the whole it reminds me of Minimal Compact, especially the vocals. They investigate a variety of tactics, introducing assorted climates. The most freakish being LTD.D.M. Crook's First Big Action, but it's all good, man.

Belastungsprobe - Platzdruck 90 ATÜ (1981)

Weird art punk from Hamburg, Germany. The songs vacillate between lo-fi punk with touches of the strange, to full on ZickZack type oddities. With lots of synth noises, a ring modulator, and drum machine on a couple of tracks. Of special note is Randerscheinung, alien wave rules. This is their second (and I think better) of two EP's. Temporal Pain - More to Come (1982)

Seriously twisted acid casualty art punk from Tennessee. 8 minutes of early Chrome type dementia, mixed with unhinged freakouts like something the Boredoms were up to in their early stage. Those are only reference points because they found a sound all it's own, and keep you guessing about what sort of strange antics will come next. On baptist girls (maybe the most normal song here) the drums stutter and stumble around evoking absurd uncomfortable images of  these art freaks trying to pick up on straight southern girls, hilarious!

To those in need of more temporal pain, please put down the ice pick and check out this ltd/ltd. sampler. Seems there were plenty of interesting sounds being made in that region at the time. Mutant sounds had this up though the link is dead, but their entertaining description is worth reading. So here it is again ripped from my own copy. Music this cool needs to be heard.

Positive Noise - Give Me Passion 12", Charm 12", Love Like Property 7" (1981)

There were so many uniquely brilliant records coming out in 1981, it boggles the mind. 1981 was a big year for Scotland's Positive Noise as well. The original incarnation lead by Ross Middleton's distinctive croon. Released an LP, a bunch of singles, and had a couple of comp appearances. Their Heart of Darkness is one of my favorite post-punk LP's of the day, and has yet to be reissued. If you haven't heard Heart of Darkness, I recommend you check it out here before listening to these singles.

It's worth noting the two 12" records here have an extra song the 7"s omit. Both End of a Dream, and Moscow Motion are great Positive Noise tracks. Ditto for Love Like Property, and Give Me Passion. All are similar in style to Heart of Darkness. Both Ghosts, and ...And Yet Again were on the LP, the latter being the only early Positive Noise song I don't have much love for. Charm finds them trying on some more danceable sounds, with a horn section. Pretty cool, but it's not really my thing. I also included the 7" edited version of Charm, and Give Me Passion from the 7", because it's a slightly better rip.

There's also two live tracks on the Cabaret Futura comp I put up here. Mutant Sounds has the Second City Statik comp also with two songs. So that's the entirety of the Ross Middleton era Positive Noise recorded works. After which the band changed it's sound quite a lot. Ross would go on the form the synthpop duo of Leisure Process, with occasional Positive Noise contributor Gary Barnacle.

Moonlight Radio (1981)

Stellar post punk compilation of mostly UK bands, that played at the Midnight Club in London.
I had to adjust the volume on a few tracks, because the discrepancy was to much to bear.

Anyway there's loads of killer tunes here. My favorites coming from The Pinkies, Flying Club, The Room, Dr Mix and the Remix, Patrik Fitzgerald Group, and Out on Blue Six.

Againagainagain – Forever / A Cold Place (1983)

Some melodic post punk from New Jersey. A Cold Place has a jangly sound close to Felt. Except the singer sounds more like Jack Grisham here than Lawrence. Forever has more of a Joy Division influence, resembling The Comsat Angels, or The Sound. Insert included.

SF Sound OF Music Club Live Vol.1 (1983)

Here's a slew of arty San Francisco bands rockin' live in 1983. About half these bands had their own records, about half not. My favorite moment is Arkansaw Man taunting the crowd with a Led Zeppelin cover, then going into one of their better songs. Me thinks there's a few standout tracks here, what say you? Was there ever a volume two?

The Terminal Jive and Scarlet Alive E.P. (1982)

Two great post punk bands from the UK, on a split EP. The Terminal Jive tracks animate high energy (China Doll is killer) compared to the moodier sounds of Scarlet Alive. Their snarky Explain All That is a keeper, and makes me remember The Fall.
