Street to Street - Volume Two (1981)

Chock-full of phenomenal songs, here's an excellent postpunk compilation from Liverpool. Chinese Religion taking cues from PIL. Games coming up with OMD sounding synth songs that sound as good or better. Systems "Total Recall" is impossibly catchy wave. Egypt for Now's "Days on Edge" is solid postpunk weirdness. Cooling Towers "The Thesis" features a drum machine along with live drumming resulting in one the best tracks here. If you didn't hear this one when Mutant Sounds had it up, your in for a real treat!

Urang Otan (1981)

Stupendous postpunk mutant-funk sounds out of NYC. Sharing some the same musically curious odd sensibilities as contemporaries Mofungo, Material, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, V-Effect, etc. It takes a whole group of talented freaks to make a record this cool, it's a keeper!

The Nice Men - Senile Youth / I Am Wood (1981)

Pope Paul Pot - Adventures in Plastic T.V. Land (1981)

Utterly deranged Residents style experiments from San Francisco. Mr. Paul Pot is still at it today with the Happy Clams. More info on this E.P. here. "Plastic T.V. Land on Acid" may make you lament mother's day, but "This is Your Leader" is prolly my favorite of the bunch, making Snakefinger sound pop in comparison.

Dogs - Missing on the Subway / Ain't Goin' Nowhere + Rubbish / Ain't Goin' Now Here (1981)

Catchy minimal synth from the British Isles. Sounding a bit like Daniel Miller's Silicon Teens (especially on the song Rubbish) but with better and original songs. Missing on the Subway (featured below) is a standout, and was included in one of those New Wave Complex comps. The riff on Ain't Goin' Nowhere sounds vaguely Gary Numan-ish, but starts goin' in a different direction. My copy of the Rubbish single is a Portuguese edition, and the b-side Ain't Goin' Nowhere was titled incorrectly, but I included it in the download because it's a different much muddier mix.

Beat-E-O's - Arabian Reggae / He Waiting (1981)

I first heard these guys (and gal) on The Up Another Octave Transmission comp. Where they have a great standout track, on a comp full of great tunes. Then I recently came across this 12" and picked it up on the strength of that song "China Sleeping". The b-side "He Waiting" delivers the same kind of spastic art damaged punk-wave fun, reminding me Vancouver's AKA and their Red Therapy EP. "Arabian Reggae" is a nice dose of weirdo reggae. Inserts with lyrics included!

Ultrasheen (1981)

Art punk wave with a prominent sax in the mix. A San Francisco band on Subterranean Records! Their live performance on "Savoy Sound Wave Goodbye" is worth tracking down. It's some of the best stuff on the record including Tuxedomoon. However their tracks on Alive! Rock City aren't my cup of tea. This is a fun 7" to be certain lee.

Steel Tips (1981)

 Superb art-punk from New Jersey. Varied in styles, usually twisted roots rock when the guy sings. Then more new wave, post-punk with the female singer. They also put out a couple of  7" singles. Performance artist Joe Colman was in the band for a short time on their first one, see the video below.

Hi-Fi Bros - I Fratelli Hi-Fi (1981)

Italian post punk, produced by Arto Lindsay of DNA fame. Who also provides some guitar on their cover of Strangers in the Night. DNA drummer Ikue Mori adds a hand on Sixti's'n'Kisses. Three disemboweled re-conceived cover songs, and a great original tune.

Volumatix - Volume One (1982) Fitness / Trashman (1981)

New wave from Houston, Texas. Straight Line, Fitness, and Obscene Phone Call are all well done quirky new wave tunes that I like quite a lot. The rest I don't listen to that much. They put out an LP called In The City in '84 that I've not heard. And made a video for Obscene Phone Call that I'll put below. Seems a weird song choice as it's pretty much an instrumental aside from a few surprised sounding words from the singer. Still it makes a good video story. I wonder what kinds of hilarity they would have come up with for a Fitness video. Again I don't have the picture sleeve for the 7" but scans are at discogs.

Led by Lyndon Morgans, this UK band cranked out some great catchy tunes. Blending new wave/post punk and glam rock together, with vocals that remind me early Peter Gabriel. "Here Come the Caesars" for example is a killer track!

Death in the Shopping Malls - (Man on a) Tight-Rope / Purpose (1981)

Hard to find record from Boston, and even harder to find with the cover sleeve. So I got this picture off of Discogs. Released on the cheeky titled Modern Methadone Records. Which some may recognize is a send up of  the prolific Boston label Modern Method. Btw I put the two Modern Method, A Wicked Good Time! comps here. Purpose reminds me of Active Ingredients from NY in it's manic punk-wave art grind. (Man on a) Tight-Rope has a Voidoids feel to it.

Originally from Cornwall then London. Post-punk with two vocalists alternating male/female. Read the whole history here. Similar to A Certain Ratio, etc. In the sense that they started out with moody post punk explorations and got more and more dance friendly as the years went by, culminating in their last 7" not included here. They cover Ball of Confusion which is nice and all, but I find their own tunes a lot more engaging. I inclued the Shake-Rake 7" which I had previously posted here. Since someone had it taken down, claiming it's a Japanese anime!

From Manchester bestowing great post punk sounds with free jazz flavoring added. Music...isms blog has more info. Valium Girls is a fine example of twisted pop, that found it's way to a Messthetics comp.
